Introduction

Solarfix was proud to partner with Royal Portrush Golf Club on the installation of a bespoke solar PV system at their Main Clubhouse. As the hub of the club, the clubhouse houses offices, the bar, restaurant, and key administrative spaces, making it central to the club’s daily operations.

The club recognised the financial and environmental advantages of solar power and wanted a system that could reliably power essential facilities, reduce running costs, and support their long-term sustainability goals. At the same time, it was important that any solution respected the traditional appearance of the clubhouse. Royal Portrush were keen to benefit from solar without installing visible panels on the main roof, preserving the familiar look the building has always had.

To achieve this, Solarfix designed a tailored system that utilises the flat roof areas, allowing the panels to be discreetly hidden from view. This approach delivers the full benefits of solar energy while maintaining the clubhouse’s original aesthetic. The result is a solution that integrates seamlessly with the building’s structure and day-to-day operations, with minimal disruption to members and staff. This forward-thinking approach proved especially valuable during a landmark year for the club, as Royal Portrush hosted The Open Championship, welcoming thousands of visitors, players, and staff to the site.

Solar install at Royal Portrush Golf Club

The Royal Portrush Clubhouse system was carefully designed to support the club’s operational demands, including lighting, kitchen equipment, office technology, and entertainment areas. A SolarEdge inverter, paired with high-efficiency PV panels, converts sunlight into clean, reliable electricity while optimising output to suit the building’s usage patterns.

Financial Benefits

The Royal Portrush Clubhouse installation delivers clear and measurable financial savings, offsetting over 40% of the building’s electricity consumption. Over the course of a year, the system is expected to generate more than 9,000 kWh, reducing reliance on the grid and helping protect the club from rising energy costs.

Electricity produced on site is generated at a fraction of the market rate, providing long-term operational efficiency and a strong return on investment. Over the 25-year panel warranty period, the system will generate in excess of 220,000 kWh. The resulting savings can be reinvested back into the club’s facilities, helping to maintain the high standards members expect while operating in a more sustainable way.

Why Royal Portrush Chose Solarfix

Royal Portrush Golf Club chose Solarfix for our proven experience in designing bespoke solar solutions that align with building aesthetics, roof structures, and real-world electricity usage. A representative from the club commented:

“Each project was delivered with exceptional professionalism, technical expertise, and meticulous attention to detail, which is why we’ve continued to return to Solarfix every time.”

Solarfix managed the entire process, from initial site survey and system design through to installation and commissioning. Drawing on our experience as leading solar panel suppliers in Northern Ireland, we ensured full compliance with local regulations, delivered a high-quality installation, and provided ongoing support to maximise long-term system performance.

Environmental Impact

The Royal Portrush Clubhouse solar installation plays an important role in supporting the club’s sustainability objectives. By generating clean, renewable energy on site, the system reduces dependence on fossil fuels and lowers overall carbon emissions.

Each kilowatt-hour of solar energy produced contributes to a measurable reduction in greenhouse gases. The system is expected to deliver annual CO₂ savings of over 3,000 kg and, over the lifetime of the panels, will prevent more than 70,000 kg of carbon emissions.

Conclusion

The Royal Portrush Clubhouse solar project demonstrates how solar power in Northern Ireland can deliver meaningful financial savings and environmental benefits without compromising the character of a building. By working with Solarfix, Royal Portrush Golf Club has invested in a high-performance, reliable solar system that improves energy independence while preserving the traditional appearance of their clubhouse.
