Delivering Long-Term Energy Savings Through Solar PV

Solarfix partnered with MCD Engineering to help reduce operational energy costs, improve sustainability performance, and strengthen the company's long-term energy resilience through the design and installation of bespoke solar photovoltaic systems. The project demonstrates how renewable energy can provide significant financial and environmental benefits for energy-intensive manufacturing businesses.

MCD Engineering is a well-established engineering company specialising in high-quality fabrication and finishing services for industrial, agricultural, commercial, and private sector customers. Operating within a highly competitive market, the company continually seeks ways to improve efficiency, control operating costs, and enhance the value delivered to its customers.

Like many businesses within the manufacturing and engineering sector, MCD Engineering faces ongoing challenges from rising energy prices and increasing operational costs. With substantial daytime electricity demand generated by machinery, fabrication equipment, lighting systems, and workshop operations, reducing dependence on grid-supplied electricity became a strategic priority for the business.

To address these challenges, Solarfix was selected to design and install two tailored solar PV systems across three locations at MCD Engineering's Dungannon facility. The project was delivered entirely in-house by the Solarfix team, ensuring quality control throughout the design, installation, and commissioning stages.

System Overview

MCD Engineering Shed

  • System Size: 80kWp

  • Inverter Configuration: 1 × Solis 40kW Inverter

MCD Paint Shed

  • System Size: 60kWp

  • Inverter Configuration: 1 × Solis 40kW Inverter

Payback Period: Under 3 Years for Both Systems

Following a detailed assessment of the site's energy consumption patterns, available roof space, and operational requirements, Solarfix designed two highly efficient systems specifically tailored to maximise energy generation and self-consumption. This bespoke approach ensures that the systems generate electricity when it is needed most, allowing MCD Engineering to achieve the greatest possible return on its investment.

The combined installations are expected to deliver substantial long-term benefits for the business. By generating a significant proportion of the site's electricity requirements from renewable energy, MCD Engineering can reduce its exposure to volatile energy markets while improving overall operational efficiency.

Projected Benefits

The solar PV installations are forecast to deliver:

  • Carbon savings of almost 800,000 kg

  • Financial savings exceeding £1.25 million

  • A projected return on investment of more than 35%

  • Payback achieved in less than three years

Environmental Advantages

Beyond the financial advantages, the project supports MCD Engineering's commitment to sustainability and responsible business operations. By reducing carbon emissions and increasing the use of clean, renewable energy, the company is enhancing its environmental credentials while continuing to meet customer expectations for quality, reliability, and value.

A Sustainable Future

This project highlights how strategic investment in renewable energy can deliver measurable business benefits. Through Solarfix's tailored design and installation expertise, MCD Engineering has taken a significant step towards greater energy independence, lower operating costs, and a more sustainable future. As energy costs continue to rise across the manufacturing sector, the installation provides a long-term solution that strengthens both the company's financial performance and environmental responsibility.
